Tencel™ / Lyocell – sustainable fiber from wood

Tencel™ is a brand name for the fiber Lyocell, which is obtained from natural cellulose. The raw material usually comes from wood from sustainably managed forests.

Lyocell is one of the modern cellulose fibers and combines natural materials with a comparatively environmentally friendly manufacturing process.

Many sustainable fashion brands use Tencel™ because the fiber is particularly soft, breathable, and comfortable on the skin. LANA Organic also uses Tencel™ in selected collections to develop comfortable and durable garments.

How Tencel™ / Lyocell is produced

Tencel™ is obtained from cellulose extracted from wood fibers.

The manufacturing process involves several steps:

  1. Extraction of cellulose from wood
  2. Dissolving the cellulose in a special solvent
  3. Spinning the fibers into yarn
  4. Processing the yarn into fabrics

An important advantage: The solvent used is largely reused in a closed loop. This results in significantly less chemical waste than with older cellulose fiber processes.

Advantages of Tencel™

Tencel™ possesses several properties that make it a popular material for sustainable clothing.

Especially soft

The smooth fiber structure ensures a very comfortable feel on the skin.

Breathable

Tencel™ can absorb and release moisture well, keeping fabrics cool and comfortable.

Environmentally friendly production process

The production process works with a closed solvent cycle, which means resources are used more efficiently.

Biodegradable

Since Tencel™ is based on natural cellulose, the fiber is biodegradable under suitable conditions.

Difference between Tencel™ / Lyocell and Viscose

Tencel™ / Lyocell Viscose
modern manufacturing process older production process
closed solvent cycle partially more chemically intensive
high fiber stability lower durability
particularly smooth surface often less durable

For these reasons, Lyocell is often considered a more sustainable development of classic cellulose fibers.

Why sustainable fashion brands use Tencel™

Tencel™ combines several advantages:

  • natural raw material from wood
  • comfortable wearing properties
  • modern manufacturing process
  • versatile applications

Many sustainable collections combine Tencel™ with natural fibers such as organic cotton or linen.

LANA Organic also uses Tencel™ to develop high-quality fabrics with a high level of comfort.

FAQ about Tencel™

Is Tencel™ sustainable?
Tencel™ is considered one of the more environmentally friendly cellulose fibers, as the solvent in the manufacturing process is largely reused.

Is Tencel™ better than cotton?
Both materials have different advantages. Cotton is robust and versatile, while Tencel™ is particularly soft and breathable.

Is Tencel™ natural or synthetic?
Tencel™ is based on natural cellulose from wood, but it is industrially processed into fibers.

Is Tencel™ biodegradable?
Yes, since the fiber is based on natural cellulose, it can be biodegraded under suitable conditions.

For many years, LANA Organic has relied on selected natural fibers and modern sustainable materials such as Tencel™ to develop durable and comfortable fashion.
